Fun - Thirsty Thursday with CEO, Jesslyn Rollins

Dear LYTERS⚡️

Thank you to Irina Baranov for teaching me that people retain 50-70% more information if they have FUN learning it!

We all can get stuck in what business should look like: Sit down meetings, reading emails, speeches in front of a PowerPoint, discussions in a board room…

BUTTS IN SEATS 🪑!

Heads down 🙇🏼‍♀️!

Back to work! 🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏾🏃🏼‍♂️

But if you can retain 50-70% MORE of what you learn… then why aren’t we all having a bit more fun at our jobs?!

I’ll tell you why…

Fun is “uncomfortable.” Fun may “make me look stupid”. Fun is “unnecessary.” Fun is…

WEIRD! 🤪

I went to Opening Day of Leadership Cobb 2024 this past week where we were quickly organized into groups of 15 people that we had never met. The leaders passed us drums sticks 🥁, and told us that we had 15 minutes to come up with a one minute drum skit where everybody in the group had to play a part. Oh, and by the way, you would perform this in front of the everyone (about 50 people) when we were done.

….I cannot express the fear in everyone’s eyes! 😱😨😟😳

We were all scrambling to know where to start. How do you walk into a group of people you’ve never met and organize them into a drumline?! How do you know what song to pick?! Do I start playing on beat one or five?!  Ahhhhh! 😱 And now we only have 10 more minutes!!!! ⏰

Do you know what I learned from that experience?

When you have a task you need to get done in a quick amount of time:
  • You have to speak up if you have something to contribute
  • You have to pick a direction and go
  • People need to know where they stand
  • People need to know what their part is and commit to it
  • And by God, even if you don’t know what you’re doing, look like you do!

I left that room, feeling more energized at 9 o’clock at night than I have in weeks.

Oh, and if you were wondering... our group won! 🏆

Success and learning is not always found in board rooms, behind closed doors, or chugging through an Excel spreadsheet. If you want to retain more of what you learn, put yourself out there, don’t be afraid to look stupid, and find ways to have fun along the way!

LYTE it up!
