Question for this week: “What is the biggest challenge 🌋 you’re facing right now as CEO?” Right now it’s learning how to best lead my new Leaders.

Success and learning is not always found in board rooms, behind closed doors, or chugging through an Excel spreadsheet. If you want to retain more of what you learn, put yourself out there, don’t be afraid to look stupid, and find ways to have fun along the way!

At first glance you may think we’re in a crowded competitive space, but we don’t see it that way. We have carved out a little niche space that’s all our own: We’re here to serve the needs of every day warriors that have a need for serious hydration.

When you are building a business from the ground up, you have to try things. And this process is MESSY.

You don’t have the luxury of historical data. You can’t afford the cream of the crop software. And you do your best to create a plan and make educated decisions. But, at the end of the day, you aren’t God and can’t 100% predict what is going to happen in the future.

But when it comes to a cultural overhaul, a new product launch, hiring, or building out a retail strategy, YOU CANT JUST CHECK THE BOXES . Your customers and your team members will know it. All of us can smell the difference between passion and apathy. All of us can tell the difference between effort and going through the motions. And all of us have more in us to give.

Crockpotting 👩🏼‍🍳 is the action of letting things sit - allowing time and space to go by so that the conscious and subconscious can marinate on an idea. It allows you the time to ask questions, get the right people in the room to help you work through the pros and cons, or simply sleep on an idea to make sure you wake up with the same initial response.

In my first job out of college, I was a recruiter. My Recruiting Manager told me that even though all of that legwork had been done to find the right candidate and everything SEEMED like it was headed towards the finish line, I needed to keep talking to other people as a back up.

People often wonder how BIOLYTE kept expenses so low in the early years. Well, one person worked out of a tent and the other worked out of her car. I keep this photo right behind me in my office to remind me to be grateful for the challenges we face today because they they have stemmed from our success.

Positive Intelligence lays out which Saboteurs (overactive negative voices) afflict you the most. Positive intelligence teaches you how you can overcome these Saboteurs by leaning into your Sage (your best, most positive self). I’m learning that the best thing I can do as a leader is to be self aware.

You have to move things around to make yourself stronger. When you’re taking a beating, don’t snap, bend. And at your core, you need to be “spongy” or open to new ideas and new ways of approaching a stubborn issue that keeps pounding your trunk.

Last week, we did our first ever company-wide sales training. We carved out 3 hours where the entire company - Operations, Marketing, Sales, People and Culture, and Finance - hopped on Google Meet and learned the ins and outs of how to sell BIOLYTE.

Falling down may throw you on a different path, but it proves that it is time for you to move on and start walking another way. Even if it wasn’t your choice, the universe made that decision for you. You’re supposed to be on another path, a better path. If you fall down - GET BACK UP.

Jesslyn Rollins explains the value of investing in the right team members. "You have to get the right people - the people that align with your company’s values and priorities - and then trust them and empower them to lean into their strengths to get the job done."
